January 2022 Writers Roundtable
Tuesday, January 11, 2021 from 6-7:30PM
Writers Roundtable
(A monthly, informal discussion where we talk about topics relevant to today’s working author.)
January’s topic: “Planning For Your Success in 2022″
Setting goals is one thing. Planning HOW to achieve
those goals is where the rubber meets the road.
This is especially true for writers because,
as many of us know, finishing your book is just one step
on the journey to becoming a successful writer.
Join us for a very special Roundtable where we will
start with Maslow’s theories on human motivation then move
onto project planning tips and setting guardrails for our success.
By asking ourselves three important questions
(what do I want? why do I want it? and what am I willing to do (or not do) to get it?)
we can figure out what we need to measure in order to achieve our goals.
Come prepared to take notes, share and interact.
Moderated by Eric James Miller
This will be another virtual meeting via Zoom.

Writers Roundtable – October 2019
Writers Roundtable
Tuesday, October 8th, 2019
from 6:30-7:30PM
(inside the Coffee Press at Paseo Verde Library in Green Valley Ranch)
Topic: “Setting Goals and Anticipating Hurdles for 2020″
(Strategies to anticipate the challenges to your 2020 writing goals)
Expanding on last month’s pursuit of publication discussion, this month we are giving members and guests the opportunity to talk about what they are working on and identify challenges to their publishing goals for 2020. We all get energized talking about our work. But sometimes we avoid discussing the hurdles we must overcome to reach our lofty, or even our more humble writing goals. Writing is a solitary art only when you are putting words to the page. To take a book to market it takes a village. This meeting will serve as a forum to articulate our goals with each other and discuss any areas we are unsure about. Whether you think you need help with story structure, polishing your manuscript, editing, cover design, layout, finding an agent or publisher, setting up your own publishing company, marketing, public speaking or anything else, identifying what we’re unsure about or need help with enables us to find the resources we need in order to achieve our goals. It will also help WSN plan specific programs in the coming year to help you on your journey. So join us at our next WSN Roundtable. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss your current projects with the group, get feedback from your fellow writers and discuss strategies for getting published in the new year.
We look forward to seeing you for good coffee and collaborative conversation!
Moderated by Eric James Miller.
(free for WSN Members and first time guests / $5 non-members)

(Building the confidence to send your work out into the world!)
Do you have work that’s ready for a readership? Need an extra jolt of motivation to get you to send it out there? Join us at our next WSN Roundtable. Bring in one story or essay you would like to see published in the coming months and be prepared to discuss it with the group. You’ll have the opportunity to read a passage, get feedback from your fellow writers and discuss target markets for your work. We look forward to seeing you for good coffee, great conversation and your next writing credit!

WSN's roundtable discussions are informal, but informative. Everyone will have the chance to share their thoughts and ask questions about various aspects of being a working writer. As always, the conversation is likely to morph and evolve in different directions depending on what everyone brings to the table with their favorite cup of elixir.

2019: May Writers Roundtable
This one is a little different, but should prove interesting:

How do we portray a screen-based world in our fiction and nonfiction?
Moderator Greg Blake Miller is going to bring some essays (including a great one by Oliver Sacks)
to discuss and as always we invite attendees to share examples of artful portrayals of the modern wired age
(such as “Black Mirror” and the recent movie “Searching”).
Writers Roundtable – January 8, 2019
Tuesday, January 8, 6:30-7:30PM
Topic: Social Media And You
Join us as we talk about building and maintaining an effective author platform using social media. Starting with what is an author platform? we will look at many creative and effective ways to build, grow and maintain one. This discussion will NOT just be about how to build a website or capture emails for your next marketing campaign. However, websites, blogs and other social media tips and strategies will definitely be part of the discussion. We will also be talking about marketing yourself as an expert witness and paid speaker among other things. This is an excellent opportunity to see and hear how other authors have done it and at the same time bring your real world questions and challenges to the table! Our discussions are informal, but informative. Everyone will have the chance to share their thoughts and ask questions about various aspects of being a working writer. As always, the conversation is likely to morph and evolve in different directions depending on what everyone brings to the table with their cup of elixir.

Writers Roundtable May 1, 2018
“Writing About Movies: The Art of Turning Pictures Back Into Words.”
We live (and have lived for a long time) in the age of the image. We can’t help talking and writing (and writing and writing …) about the images we see on screens big and small.
How do we describe what we see without descending into dry summarizations that lose the magic of the visual?
How do we describe films in a way that is as vibrant as the films themselves, sparking thought without lapsing into the banality of thumbs-up/thumbs-down verdicts?
On a deeper level, how do we write about and use the culture of the image in our own nonfiction and fiction?
Join us at 6:30 p.m. May 1 at the Paseo Verde Library’s Coffee Press Cafe for good conversation and great coffee! Moderated by Greg Blake Miller. WSN members free, guests $5.
Writers Roundtable: April 3, 2018
“Dreaming of Elsewhere and Otherwise: The Art of World-Building in Fiction and, Yes, Even Nonfiction.”
The art of creating finely-tuned detailed environments inform, contain and motivate the arc of your story and the actions of your characters.
World-Building is almost exclusively invoked in discussions of fiction, and most often fantasy. But how might the notion be useful for writers of nonfiction as they cobble together the contexts and sensory textures of past lands and times?
Bring an example of world building you think works, or doesn’t work, particularly well. Or, feel free to bring brief excerpts from your own work to share.
Free for WSN members, $5 for guests.
We look forward to seeing you at the Coffee Press inside the Paseo Verde Library!
