April 2022 Writers Roundtable

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 6-7:30PM

Writers Roundtable

(A monthly, informal discussion where we talk about topics relevant to today’s working author.)

April’s topic:  “The Hazards of Narrative Thinking”

Narrative imposes necessary and compelling form on reality, but it can often lead to oversimplification in literature, media, and everyday discourse. Figures are easily slotted into traditional narrative roles, conflicts are simplified and heightened, and emotional responses, rather than being evoked, are provoked as if by a sort of narrative algorithm.

This can overdetermine our writing and our public conversation; it can also limit mutual understanding and the complexities that should reside in the arts and humanities.

Think about narratives in our culture and in your own work and life, and come to discuss them with us on April 12 as we work to expand our idea of what a story can be and how storytellers can help foster a more nuanced, tolerant, and creative discourse in our media, families, and communities.

Topic: “The World And You”

Join us for our next Virtual Roundtable in conjunction with Olympian Creative.

This month, we’ll discuss techniques for weaving your personal story with the public story of your times. Each of us lives in the world and is shaped by its complexities; in turn, we act in the world and help change it in subtle ways. This interaction is a rich vein for creative writing that is at once personal and public. Feel free to bring examples from your favorite authors or from your own work. The Roundtable is an excellent opportunity to discuss both the craft and the deeper themes of creative work in a complex world. Olympian Creative director and UNLV writing professor Greg Blake Miller will host the session. We look forward to seeing you!
